Symbolism: Moths remind us to trust our transformational process and seek the light in dark places, opening our eyes to the ephemeral beauty and freedom on the other side of change. Ferns remind us to notice the impermanent, unfixed nature of reality.

I wanted to explore themes of impermanence using moths and ferns, focusing on the movement of sunlight and shadow in the forests surrounding my home. Moths only live a few days as adults and the forest looks different each time I enter it, reminding me that all of life is made up of temporary moments. This poem is based on the titles of the nine paintings in this collection.
Sic Transit Gloria Mundi
Thus passes the world–
unfixed, fleeting, fluttering
in all its glory
Sunlight and shadow–
transient, temporary
rolling through a wood
Drifting, dusty stars–
momentary, mortal
lifespan, just like ours
Moveable mountain–
evanescent, ephemeral
unfettered fountain
Silk twilight, blue morn–
generous guides in orbit,
impermanence born
