About the Artists:

As part of their Fine Arts Curriculum, students are meant to learn the stylistic techniques of 6 master artists each school year. This year, they studied Rembrandt van Rijn's sketches and water wash technique, Thomas Gainsborough's sweeping landscapes and portraiture, Edgar Degas' ballerinas, Claude Monet's high-impressionism water lilies, Berthe Morisot's love of textures, and Vincent Van Gogh's blues and yellows on a grand scale. One of my favorite ways to enhance this fine arts unit is by creating a collaborative art piece each year. I love doing this because our students get to see how their small contribution matters greatly to the art piece as a whole. For this Van Gogh piece, our students (ages 4-12) worked in small groups following Van Gogh's impressionist style; using tempera paint sticks, they created dashed lines, blended colors, and built upon the work of the schoolmates to create a beautiful replica of Cafe Terrace at Night. It is always a thrill to watch this art project come together, one class at a time, and reveal the finished product. I love that every single student gets to say, "I helped make that!"
