Artist Statement:

Dream Protector is an homage to a giant stuffed moose that my parents bought for me when I was young. Being neurodivergent, and profoundly anxious about everything, I had a hard time sleeping alone in my bedroom. If my mom or dad wasn't lying right beside me until I fell asleep every night, I would inevitably fall into a pit of my own fear.

On the day I saw the moose, I begged my parents to let me have him. I swore that he would keep me safe. He would make everything easier. He would grant my parents the nightly freedom to do whatever they wish after 8 pm. Dream Protector depicts the moose doing exactly what I swore he would do: protecting me from the nightmares and monsters that haunted me every night.

About the Artist:

Robin (They/them) is a queer, nonbinary, and autistic artist and storyteller based in Tenino, Washington. They hold a BFA in Illustration from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. They primarily use Holbein acrylic gouache on hot press watercolor paper. Growing up homeschooled, their experiences as a neurodivergent child continue to influence their work today. Their work draws inspiration from their memories and identities, exploring themes such as Pacific Northwest wildlife, comfort, home, love, queerness, nostalgia, trauma, and mental illness. In their free time, they love experimenting with various mediums, ranging from zines and lino-block printing to crochet and needle felting.
