My work as a textile artist and painter fuses my fascination and love for repeated patterns and natural textures. I love color and botanical details.
My mixed media paintings harness details inspired by nature. Incorporating gestural lines and repeated patterns, these layered works capture and explore the balance of organic imagery with geometric shapes and forms. I am intrigued with the negative space that emerges as a painting develops and the spacial transparency that is created. I attempt to keep the work structured and expressive with a visual awareness of scale, rhythm and movement. I paint with acrylics and use lithography sticks for mark making. Some works have nylon thread hand-stitched directly into the canvas.
Julie Clendenen Simpson is a textile designer and abstract painter who hand weaves innovative, contemporary textiles. All pieces are heirloom quality and woven on a 10 harness floor loom. Julie has been weaving for over 35 years and loves color combining luxurious fibers to produce woven accessories that pursue elegance, creativity and classic craftsmanship.
Equally colorful as her fiber work, her abstract mixed media paintings harness details inspired by nature. These colorful acrylic canvases capture and explore the balance of organic imagery with geometric, grid like shapes and repeated patterns.
