I am a figurative artist. I use oil painting and drawing to explore and understand family, friends, past events, and the natural world. For me the most important thing is the time spent painting or drawing, allowing the duration of my attention to reveal feelings that only come after looking for a long time.
I also make abstract sculptures from steel, wood, and glass. These generally live outside and focus on some aspect of nature, such as gathering rainwater.
MacCready studied drawing and sculpture at Yale 1978-1982, receiving a BA in Architecture. He has studied oil painting with Kathy Gore-Fuss in Olympia since 2023. He lives and works in Olympia, WA, and has been a Professor in the University of Washington School of Oceanography since 1994.
