There are many folk tales surrounding herons throughout the world; some about endurance and dedication, some about ego and foolishness. In some stories, herons appear noble and patient, while other cultures view it as lucky, foolish, or stubborn. What draws us to animals most, I believe, is our tendency to cast them as parts of ourselves-- both like and unlike us. I'm interested in the ways animals appear as a mysterious other while also being a familiar friend that helps us understand our own nature better.
