Artist Statement:

I’ve always been drawn to the moment just before stillness — the breath held between one thing and the next. Between Strides came from that fascination. A horse mid-leap exists in pure suspension: neither here nor there, neither earthbound nor free. That threshold is where I wanted to live with this piece.

Encaustic is the only medium that could hold what I was after. The wax builds dimensionally, catching and releasing light the way movement itself does — you see something different depending on where you stand. Each layer is fused, permanent, yet the surface still feels alive.

I grew up around horses, around water, around the kind of light that doesn’t stay put. Between Strides is about honoring that fleeting moment when power and grace are perfectly, briefly, the same thing.

About the Artist:

Gabrielle England is a fine artist based in Olympia, Washington, working in encaustic mixed media, acrylic, pastel, and portraiture. Her work is rooted in a childhood spent at the edge of Mud Bay on the lower Puget Sound, a landscape of tides, shifting light, and animals that continues to define her vision. England’s encaustic work explores the luminous, layered qualities of wax as a medium for capturing movement and atmosphere.
