Artist Statement:

The Mock Turtle was the first character from Alice’s world to pop into my mind. A sad fellow who once was a real turtle, he’s not specifically described in the book as his traditionally shown half calf & half sea turtle. This depiction is the artistic license of original Alice illustrator, John Tenniel, as mock turtle soup is made with veal. I took my own liberties with the Mock Turtle’s features using the textiles I had around. I started with the chest plate and built off that. He kept getting larger and larger with each element added and I think it suits him just fine!! An educated fellow always ready with a song and the picture of sustainability, he’s made mostly with upcycled wool sweaters with faux fur accents both machine and hand stitched.

About the Artist:

Christine Malek blends mixed media whimsy and sensible recycled materials. Each creation is its own. Whether it’s made from glass, fiber, plastic or found items. It’s going to do what it does. Christine just hangs on for the ride.

A life long artist, she’s been stop and go, off and on with making pieces. Now it’s on and a go after a 12 year stint of art gallery ownership with Gallery Boom. It’s time to create a new body of work and play. The trick is learning to make art a mirror, not a shield, by trusting and having fun."
