A black hawthorn tree outside my studio was the initial spark of inspiration for this series. Hawthorn has been used for centuries by cultures across the globe as an antioxidant-rich heart tonic and digestive aid. In addition to the medicinal cardiovascular properties, it is also used for emotional heart healing, protective spells, and is said to be a gateway to other realms. As a visual symbol, the hawthorn berries are designed to awaken, expand, and invite you inside the home of your heart.

About the Nature/Nurture collection
The Nature/Nurture Collection explores food as both sustenance and sacrament through fruits and the moths that love to eat them as much as we do.
Early experiences and cultural messaging can distort the ritual of nourishment and diconnect us from the intuitive wisdom of our bodies. Like moths digest themselves entirely to transform inside their cocoons, we take part in the miraculous daily act of transforming food into energy through digestion. This series is an invitation to reclaim food as an instrument of healing, love, and connection. To view sustenance as a sacred act and participate in this ritual of care more fully.

Sacraments
To hunger is human,
but not ours alone
life needs death
like life needs life
like lungs need breath
like light needs night
To nourish is human,
but not ours alone
root to branch
to fruit to seed
hawthorne, apple–
sacraments, freed
To flourish is human,
but not ours alone
consider a lily,
or starling, or stone
or the strawberry moon,
with naught to atone
To nurture is human,
but not ours alone
open, gasp
dissolve our walls
to cradle, clasp
allow, then fall
out of the dream
into the all
