Artist Statement:

Each collage has its own starting point. The piece I've submitted towards this show is titled, "I've learned so much from my mistakes that I'm thinking of making some more."  Here the dress was the starting point. I next found the two headed image in an old magazine as an advertisement for gin. In their hair were fixings for making gin and tonics: limes and juniper berries. Those images wouldn't work with the dress so I found antique images of flowers. She naturally now needed to be situated in a garden. So I searched for an images of a garden path wide enough for her dress to move through. I embellished her with a necklace made from an old bracelet and glued rhinestones throughout her dress. She's now quite fancy, so she has a rhinestone leash leading to her pet deer. I continued adding lots of cut out flowers to her garden. And lastly, a Renaissance deer image cut from an old tapestry. Stepping back, I realized she has an Alice in Wonderland quality to her.

About the Artist:

When Sharon Styer was elected photographer for her high school newspaper, it set the stage for a life time of recording her life through image and writing. Decades later the artist's quandary hit, "what to do with all these images?' Multi media through collage stepped in. Nearly ten years later, Styer has incorporated many other skills into her collaged works. She weaves embroidery, sewing, watercolors, and pressed flowers into her story telling work.
