Artist Statement:

Succulents have been my favorite plant to grow and subject to paint, especially those of the Echeveria family. I love that a mother plant can produce endless babies with a bit of care. I enjoy witnessing the growth of new life from a single dropped leaf. ‘Succulents 2’ is a continuation of a series that started many years ago with my first succulent painting. I hope to continue this series of round, bulbous forms and amplification of the subtle shifts in color.

This piece is my return to oil painting after a long hiatus and significant life changes. It required me to overcome the fear and intimidation I felt around returning to oil painting. The creation of this painting felt like a “welcome home”- welcome back to art and welcome to the Olympia art community. We (myself and my art) have emerged.

About the Artist:

Valerie grew up in the Bay Area, California where she started painting and drawing at a young age. She went on to study fine art in college and had many amazing professors, including Rebecca J. Alex and Noah Buchanan. During her studies, she had the opportunity to spend a semester in Florence, Italy, where she fully immersed herself in art history and especially enjoyed learning about Renaissance and Baroque artistic methods and techniques.

An enriching career in Architecture and Construction honed Valerie’s design and visual composition skills over the next 10+ years. After the birth of her daughter in 2020, she and her family moved to Olympia, Washington where Valerie found a renewed passion for fine art. She is now a resident artist at Boom Studios in Olympia.
