Artist Statement:

My art is generally inspired by my study of scientific illustration. It is created mostly with wet on wet watercolor techniques and occasionally includes fine details done in colored pencil, ink, and/or gold foil. Though my rendering style and mediums are more contemporary, my compositions are heavily inspired by traditional layouts found in the 1800s scientific illustrations I spent my childhood obsessing over. As I branched out from art school my style expanded to include the spatial awareness I learned while illustrating patents and the ability to create a narrative I learned while illustrating beverage labels. My focus stylistically has recently been on bringing together the neo-traditional tattoo style that I have always loved and the realistic style I have always painted in. My most recent compositions have begun to include more modern techniques such as heavy black outlines and a mix of realistic and graphic styles. Regardless of the medium in which I am working, my mission has always been to celebrate the beauty of nature, especially in light of the growing impact of human devastation on the natural world.

About the Artist:

Cass Graybeal Brown is a full time tattoo artist and painter currently based in Tacoma, WA. Her passion for art started young, fostered by a long line of strong female artists. Her mother and grandmother’s obsession with gardening was essential in the creation of her style which is focused on the natural world. Completing a BFA in Illustration and a minor in Scientific Illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design, she graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2017. After graduating she was hired at Northern Virginia Graphics, a small patent illustration firm in the DC metro area. She worked there for 4 years while also carrying on a freelance illustration business before moving to the Pacific Northwest with her military husband and two pitbulls where she fell in love with the tattoo industry and began an apprenticeship under Danny Schreiber at the Copper Wolf Tattoo and Fine Art Gallery. Her love of nature art translated into a specialty in floral tattoos in a variety of styles. She is now in her 3rd year of full-time tattooing and her first year as a full member of the Proctor Art Gallery in Tacoma.
