They’re orderly, historic, business-as-usual places. And then there’s a pig on the roof. When pigs fly. The thing that isn’t supposed to happen has happened. A sign in the window says “no pigs,” like rules still matter. The narwhal coming up through the street is that feeling of “what is even going on anymore?” The world no longer making sense in the categories we were given. The sky feels ominous, alive, unsettled, but nothing stops. No one reacts. Life continues. The spikes on the roof and the gold barbed wire over the fence feel like fear turned into architecture. This painting is about living in a moment where the impossible is no longer shocking. It’s normal. My most recent compositions have begun to include more modern techniques such as heavy black outlines and a mix of realistic and graphic styles. For hundreds of years people lived in tribes surrounded by their community. In modern day society in America there is a mental health epidemic, and this is partly due to people being dis-connected from their communities and themselves. Isolation and not being seen or heard is prevalent in our society. We can change the world one person at a time by witnessing each other and listening to each other’s stories. The piece I've submitted towards this show is titled, "I've learned so much from my mistakes that I'm thinking of making some more." Here the dress was the starting point. I next found the two headed image in an old magazine as an advertisement for gin. In their hair were fixings for making gin and tonics: limes and juniper berries. Those images wouldn't work with the dress so I found antique images of flowers. She naturally now needed to be situated in a garden. So I searched for an images of a garden path wide enough for her dress to move through. I embellished her with a necklace made from an old bracelet and glued rhinestones throughout her dress. She's now quite fancy, so she has a rhinestone leash leading to her pet deer. I continued adding lots of cut out flowers to her garden. And lastly, a Renaissance deer image cut from an old tapestry. Through traditional techniques, I explore the relationship between humanity, the natural world, and the unseen forces that influence perception and experience. Nature, art history, and the human experience serve as continual points of reference, offering both structure and mystery.

This painting emerges from a recent exploration of reflection— both literal and figurative. The beetle acts as a grounding presence and a symbol of transformation, while the reflected or integrated female face blurs boundaries between interior and exterior states. Rendered through a surreal visual language, the work resists fixed narrative and instead invites contemplation. The painting suggests interconnectedness between the environment, physical and spiritual, encouraging stillness and attentive looking.

About the Artist:

Rose Aitken is a fine artist and long-time art educator whose work is grounded in classical traditions and a sustained commitment to teaching and studio practice. She recently completed a Master’s degree in Fine Art in Florence, Italy, where she studied traditional painting techniques within the historical context that shaped Western art.

Her work is rooted in observation, technical rigor, and reflection. Heavily inspired by the natural world, humanity, spiritual inquiry, and art history, Aitken’s recent paintings emerge from an ongoing exploration of reflection—both literal and metaphorical—using light, surface, and form as tools for contemplation.

Informed by her identity as an artist and as an educator, her practice reflects a reverence for creation and the dignity of human experience. Aitken seeks to create work that invites stillness, attention, and a deeper sense of connection between the viewer, the visible world, the transcendent and mystery.

Follow on Instagram

20 x 16 inches
acrylic and oil pastel on panel
$200

Contact Yvonne to purchase

Artist Statement:

Over the past 20+ years, my mixed media art and paintings have raised questions around motherhood, sexuality, gender roles, military service, mental health and personal relationships with consistent through-line of questioning systems and how they relate to identity. My work examines these social issues through a critical and personal lens. The political is personal; the personal is universal. These issues extend beyond me to community.

This mix of political/personal can be found in contemporary feelings of isolation, an increasingly common phenomenon. Though more connected than ever by online means, we remain alone (together). In my recent series of paintings Shadow Work, I examine what it means to coexist alone/together. Shadow Work consists of mixed media drawings, and paintings in acrylic, oil, and encaustic. The layered compositions explore identity and contemporary life through literal and implied figures, rhythmic patterns, and the psychological interplay of shadow and form.

About the Artist:

Yvonne Kunz was born in Great Falls, Montana, but moved frequently as a military child.
